Ethical Horse Training with Heart and Foundation
ML Horsemanship is led by Martin, a passionate and experienced horseman who brings a lifetime of hands-on expertise to his ethical, horse-first approach to training. Martin began his journey in the racing industry, spending six years immersed in the fast-paced world of Thoroughbreds. It was there he discovered a natural ability for starting young horses and working with those that others found too challenging: the misunderstood, the anxious, and the behaviourally complex.
After leaving racing, Martin spent a transformative year working with so-called “death row” horses — equines whose behavioural issues had pushed them to the brink. Many of these horses went on to find safe, loving homes, and those that didn’t were found to have significant underlying pain or medical conditions. This experience ignited a deep desire to understand what truly drives a horse’s behaviour.
Through years of research and experience, Martin realised that many horses struggle not because they’re “difficult,” but because conventional training methods often ignore foundational gaps, emotional needs, or individuality. This led him to explore and adopt modern ethical horse training, grounded in learning theory, behavioural science, and a profound respect for the horse as a social, intelligent mammal, not just a flight-driven prey animal.
Martin uses all four quadrants of learning theory to develop clear, engaging, and ethical training plans tailored to each individual horse. His goal is to create relaxed, confident, and willing horses, capable of enjoying their work and trusting the humans who guide them.
